Mobile tower radiation not as dangerous as x-ray: experts

KARACHI - Electro Magnetic Rays (EMR) emitting from mobile phone towers installed in the most populated areas of the city are less dangerous than x-rays for the health of human beings, experts told The Nation on Thursday.
Citizens have worried about the constant use of mobiles and great numbers of towers. Particularly in Karachi more than 3,500 mobile towers have so far been installed on top of the residential, commercial and educational buildings.
Some segments of the society are of the view that these towers are causing serious physical and mental destruction, because mobile phone towers emit electro magnetic rays with a high frequency of 1,900 MHZ, that can easily pass through human bodies and concrete walls. It is said that immune (defensive) system of human body is seriously affected when these EMR rays are passing through our body, in the developed countries, these towers are now being called as killer towers.
It is also said that mobile phone tower’s radioactivity is causing a serious damage to every living thing of one square kilometer range. Density ranges of this radioactivity are 72,000-17,100 microwatt per square meter.
“Mobile towers, installed on top of buildings penetrate radio activity among those who live in those buildings. Electromagnetic field of these towers attracts Radon gas from atmosphere causes blood cancer and leukemia in children present near it.
Academic union of Australia called mobile towers responsible for brain tumor. Cases of brain tumor, cancer, rickets, softness of bones, lymphoma, and deficiency of white blood cells were found in people living within 300-meter range from mobile towers.
More exposure in EMR causes more risk offing high blood pressure, heart problems, cancer, nervous system failure, brain tumor and depression, reports Swedish institute for working life. Not only human beings but animals are also being affected by the EMR from mobile towers,” it is also said on behalf of the reports given by Australian newspaper.
Some rumors are also around and in the public segments that western countries have been awakened against the destruction of mobile towers, and more than 70 schools in Spain protested against mobile towers, installed near school buildings. Talking to The Nation, Prof Dr S Shahid Hussain Zaidi, the chairman Department of Applied Physics University of Karachi, expressed doubt over the harmfulness of the EMR emitting from mobile phone towers, and said that the x-rays were more dangerous for the health of human being than EMR produced by mobile phone towers. He said: “I am not sure about the frequency of 1,900 MHZ at which mobile phone towers emit EMR, but it was not very high because at this frequency about 7.8 Electro Volt energy produced. He pointed out that the high level of frequency could ultimately cause for death of human being in few seconds, but still it was early to declare mobile phone towers as dangerous for the heath of community.
“There is no any research that revealed on the deadly aspects of EMR yield by mobile phone towers.
I strongly doubt that mobile towers destroy free radicals and DNA of human body cells, and it destroys brain cells and blood platelets. This issue, in fact, is being discussed largely in the segments of scientists, health experts and the public,” he said.
Talking to The Nation, Dr Qaisar Sajjad, the secretary general of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), has ruled out the possibility of serious damage to every living thing by mobile phone towers. He said that there was no scientific evidence that EMR of mobile towers causing memory loss, inactivate neuro muscles, headache regularly, allergy and skin diseases.
“These are rumors that fifty thousand brain tumor cases reported in 90s due to mobile phone uses, and wireless signals are real cause of brain tumor because it is decoded at one MHZ frequency in cell phone set,” he said. “Some people say that mobile towers also cause infertility and genetical problems in men; electromagnetic field causes prostate cancer and increases the risk of chest cancer, but all these assumptions are illogical and unscientific,” Dr Qaisar declared.
Dr Qaisar said that the other aspect of the issue was more dangerous than health, which was related to the installation of the towers that could cause huge damages in case of any natural disaster, including earthquake, thunder storm, heavy rains etc.
He, however, stressed the need for enacting legislation from our assemblies that allowed mobile phone companies where and on what conditions these mobile phone towers should be installed on top of the buildings situated in the city.
“This was more important to conduct a survey to know about the strength of any building or structure, in context of bearing the weight of the tower, to allow the companies to fix the towers on,” he added.
