i hope that u lappy HDD will have SATA connectivity. If motherboard of desktop has also SATA connections, then simply turn on one SATA port (they are marked as 0 and I, and normally 0 is used for primary HDD (if already its using SATA HDD) and reboot ur computer.
last month my lappy was niether booting nor installing windows (windows was crashed and i dont know much about DOS), so i do the same, not only recovered all data,, but also installed windows, so try this one
for recovery i used a software shared by LT in HC,,, i think it was Active Recovery or something like that
I know about his desktop and laptop that's why I didn't advise him that
