DOW Medical University, Admission Tragedy Continues.
Dow medical university Karachi is a world class competitor in medical studies. The graduates of the university are given respect and dignity in the world but unfortunately that day is not much far when this institution will be wiped out from its status and pride.
It have all started when for the cause of the prevention fake degree holders admission in prestigious institutes, Entry Test System was started. In this regard, one of the most prestigious universities of Karachi, NED has adopted a fair criterion. Earlier admission were awarded on the basis of F.Sc marks only but the fake degree holders came in picture then it was decided to test a candidate through an Objective Paper covering the science subjects in full.
Crystal Clear Test System of NED University
NED has implemented a law i.e. to score a minimum 40% in the entry test to meet the criteria for the admission so that the fake degree holders would be marked. NED has taken the decision to take the entry test just after the theory and practical examinations so that would be convenient for the students regarding the preparations. Yet the only criterion for admission is open merit which is based only on F.Sc marks. To score a minimum of 40% is just to meet the standards. This fair implementation has allowed good students to leave the paper even before completing it because it is not needed at all. They will be awarded admission on the basis of their F.Sc marks.
DOW University’s Terrible Admission Criteria
In this regard DOW Medical University is rolling on an opposite scenario. If you only pick the merit lists for the last few years, you will be amazed to see how admissions have been awarded. Admissions were given to students holding 60%, 70% marks but the students bearing 75% and even 85% were deprived off the same. Don’t be confused, this uncertainty in the admission is continued from many years. On one hand students are deprived from their rights and on the other hand the pride and dignity of the institution is about to collapse. Let us consider a merit list and decide it for yourself, whether it is the execution of merit or not?
DOW Medical University gives privilege to its 3 hrs entry test over F.Sc‘s two years course. The fundamentals of the merit are:
10% of the marks scored in Matriculation Exams
40% of the marks scored in F.Sc Exams
50% of the marks scored in Entry Test
The Execution of Talent and Heartbreaking of Studious Students
An illustrative example of an intelligent and studious student:
For an instance, if an intelligent student score 90% marks both in Matriculation and F.Sc Examinations and for some reasons score 40% in the Entry Test (It is very common in DOW Entry Test and it will be explained later) The merit list would be:
10% of the marks scored in Matriculation Exams = 09 MARKS
40% of the marks scored in F.Sc Exams = 36 MARKS
50% of the marks scored in Entry Test = 20 MARKS
TOTAL = 65 MARKS
An illustrative example of an average student:
Now lets us consider the merit list of an average student, who score 50% in both matriculation and F.Sc Examinations and get a score of 90 % in the entry test (which is also possible) then the merit list would be:
10% of the marks scored in Matriculation Exams = 05 MARKS
40% of the marks scored in F.Sc Exams = 20 MARKS
50% of the marks scored in Entry Test = 45 MARKS
TOTAL = 70 MARKS
Now you must have recognized that how a student bearing 90% in both examinations would be rejected in compare to a student bearing 50% marks. The whole picture reflects the unfair means through which admissions are awarded in DOW University.
DOW University Entry Test or More Likely a Puzzle:
Earlier the entry test in the DOW University is based on MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) which have now been replaced with BCQs (Best Choice Questions). MCQs are based on the fact that out of the four choices, one would be correct and you simply need to mark that one. But this year 2008, BCQs was implemented which mean that you need to select the ODD Choice from all the listed choices. That is, all the coices will be correct except one and you need to mark the wrong one. It is more likely a puzzle than an entry test.
The other very important thing to consider is that earlier these test were taken just after the examinations, both theory and practical. This year, it was first announced that the Entry Test for DOW University will be held even before Intermediate Theory Examinations. This spreads anarchy and uncertainty in students to a great deal. After protest against the decision, it was taken back. Yet it was held when students were busy in the preparation of the practical examinations.
Another characteristic of the entry test is the Negative Marking. Means if on every right answer you will get 4marks and if it’s the wrong answer 1mark will be deducted. Means if a students marks 60 right answers and 40 wrongs then he will be awarded 60-10= 50 marks. DOW University is using each and every means to discourage talented students.
If a Paper Can be Known to Certain Resources Then Why Cant DOW Test Paper ??
It is been known to all that in Pakistan on the final evening of the paper, they were exposed to certain recourses but even an average students in 7-8 hrs, after having the paper in his hand cannot prepared himself and cannot compete with a students who has studied throughout the year. In the case of DOW University, it is well taken care of the fact and has given privilege to 3hrs paper over 2 years of Intermediate course. It’s a tragic happening to award a student with more resources, money and power, the admission in DOW University and to deprive the needful.
It is a matter of fact that it took a million hands to change a system but it would be more tragic if it continues. Will present democrats investigate this matter? Will they stop the unfair admission policy and give justice to the needful students so that an abrupt stop will be placed before the devastation of the DOW Medical University.
Solution to the Issue and To Take Another Test With New Measures:
To prevent the deprivation of the admission to the needful, stoppage of entry of inexperienced person in this field and to save prestigious institution, DOW University, it is necessary that Provincial and Federal Ministries of Health and Education should take remedial measurements in this regard. It should be backed up and supported by The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA), Pakistan Medical Association, Pakistan Print and Electronic Media and others departments.
1. The present test for DOW Medical University should be cancelled and new test should be taken with new measures.
2. DOW Medical University should take entry test on the same basis of NED University.
3. Merit List should be the only criterion for the admission based on the Intermediate marks.
4. MCQs should be implemented instead of BCQs
5. Model Test should be provided atleast before 15 days of Entry Test.
6. Negative Marking should be removed from the entry test system.
