Four years in Bagram as Prisoner 650

British journalist Yvonne Ridley flew to Pakistan on a whirlwind trip this week to highlight the plight of a woman who has been held in US custody for more than four years.

She referred to the woman, known only by her prisoner number 650, as The Grey Lady of Bagram.

More than 100 journalists attended the press conference hosted by Pakistan political leader Imran Khan who pledged his full support to Ridley's mission, which is part of a Cage Prisoner Campaign to help the female detainee.

A statement of support from British MP and RESPECT Party leader George Galloway was also read out during the conference.

Details of Prisoner 650 are being kept secret by the U.S. military.

On Monday night she said, “I think everyone was shocked to hear that the Americans were holding this woman at Bagram in Afghanistan. From the information coming through I am told she is being held in exactly the same conditions as the men and has absolutely no privacy when it comes to toilet and shower facilities.

“This would never happen to a Western woman and it shows just how women are viewed by the US military. There is even a suggestion she has been molested and @@@ually abused by her captors. We need to demand the truth,” added Ridley who was held captive herself in Afghanistan for 11 days in September 2001.

“I was released on humanitarian grounds. Mercifully my treatment was good, respectful and decent, although still terrifying,” she added.

Ridley, also a patron of the organization Cage Prisoner, revealed how she first read about the woman in a book written by ex-Guantanamo detainee Moazzam Begg called Enemy Combatant.

“I remembered Moazzam telling me about the woman's screams and how he first imagined they could be from his wife. In truth, I thought maybe he had just been listening to a tape recorder as part of a form of mental torture.

“However, we now know the screams came from a woman who has been held in Bagram for some years. And without compromising anyone, we can also reveal from impeccable sources that her prison number is 650.

“This information has been enough to scramble the Pakistan media into action by demanding the return of this woman to her homeland immediately,” added Ridley.

Joining her at the open air press conference in Islamabad at the headquarters of Khan's PTI party was Saghir Hussain, a lawyer and member of Cage.

He handed over a dossier prepared by Cage which reveals the full extent of the Disappeared from Pakistan… individuals who have been literally kidnapped from the streets.

“Prisoner 650 is just the tip of a very nasty iceberg of human rights abuses, illegal detentions and rendition flights. It is a shameful episode in Pakistan's history which must be put right.”

Amina Masood Janjua, chair of the Defense of Human Rights, also joined the platform along with other supporters whose husbands, sons and brothers have disappeared without trace. She thanked Cage for its dossier and the supporting work it had conducted on the Disappeared.

“I wonder how can we hand over our sister to the non-Muslims for their illegal trial by men whose history is full of **** and other abuses to prisoners,” the Pakistani daily Dawn quoted Ridley as saying.

Ms. Ridley read the text from the book's section covering Mr. Begg's stay in Bagram, “I began to hear the chilling screams of a woman next door… Why have you got a woman next door? They told me there was no woman. But I was unconvinced. Those screams echoed through my worst nightmares for a long time. And I later learned in Guantanamo, from other prisoners, that they had heard the screams too.”

She said the account had been corroborated by four Arabs who had escaped from Bagram in July 2005. “While on the run, one not only confirmed he had heard a woman's screams, but said he had seen her.”

Ms. Ridley said, “My story made international headlines, front page pictures and major stories on TV. But there has not been one word, not one paragraph about Prisoner 650 -- the 'grey lady' of Bagram, a murderous detention facility under control of the U.S. military and intelligence services.”

She urged every Pakistani to ring America, and ask them who Prisoner 650 is. What was her crime? Who else was being held illegally? How many secret detention centers were there?

Ms. Ridley's colleague Saghir Hussain gave details about other people of the country who had 'disappeared'.

“All, like the grey lady of Bagram, have been illegally abducted by secretive intelligence agencies. They began disappearing in 2001 during the so-called war on terror,” he said.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan demanded that the government hold an investigation into the case. “What has the sovereign parliament done about the missing persons?” he asked.

انسانی حقوق کی ایک تنظیم کا الزام ہے کہ ڈاکٹر عافیہ بگرام ائر بیس میں قید ہیں۔
اسلام آباد ہائی کورٹ کے چیف جسٹس سردار محمد اسلم نے پانچ سال قبل کراچی سے لاپتہ ہونے والی ڈاکٹر عافیہ صدیقی کو، جو امریکہ سے لوٹ کر پاکستان آئی تھیں، حبس بے جا میں رکھنے کی درخواست سماعت کے لیے منظور کر لی ہے۔

لیکن عدالت نے جوہری سائنسدان ڈاکٹر عبدالقدیر خان کو عدالتی حکم کے باوجود رشتہ داروں اور دوستوں سے ملاقات کے لئے سہولیات فراہم نہ کرنے پر سیکرٹری داخلہ سمیت دیگر سرکاری افسران کے خلاف توہین عدالت کی کارروائی کی درخواست مسترد کر دی۔

یہ دونوں درخواستیں بیرسٹراقبال جعفری نے دائر کی تھیں۔

ڈاکٹر عافیہ کے معاملے میں بیرسٹر جعفری نے سیکرٹری داخلہ کمال شاہ کے توسط سے پاکستان کے انٹیلی جنس اداروں کو اور امریکی سفارتخانے کے قانونی مشیر کے ذریعے امریکی انٹیلیجنس اداروں کو فریق بنایا ہے۔

درخواست میں انسانی حقوق کی تنظیم ایشیئن ہیومن رائٹس کونسل کی ایک رپورٹ کا حوالہ دیا گیا ہے جس کے مطابق ڈاکٹر عافیہ کو پاکستانی اور امریکی انٹیلی جنس ایجنسیوں نے گرفتار کرنے کا اعتراف کیا تھا لیکن بعد میں اس سے لا تعلقی ظاہر کر دی گئی تھی۔

ڈاکٹر عافیہ اپنے تین نو عمر بچوں کے ہمراہ کراچی سے پانچ برس قبل لاپتہ ہو گئیں تھیں۔ ان پر القاعدہ کی مدد کرنے کا الزام ہے اور پوچھ گچھ کے لیے وہ امریکی تفتیشی ایجنسی ایف بی آیی کو مطلوب ہیں۔


بگرام میں امریکہ کا فوجی ٹھکانہ

انسانی حقوق کی ایشیائی تنظیم نے خیال ظاہر کیا ہے کہ ڈاکٹر عافیہ کو افغانستان میں بگرام کے مقام پر قائم امریکی جیل میں قید رکھا گیا ہے جہاں وہ قیدی نمبر 650 کے نام سے مشہور ہیں۔

اس درخواست پر سماعت بدھ کے روز متوقع ہے۔

بیرسٹر جعفری نے ڈاکٹر قدیر خان کے کیس میں اپنی درخواست میں کہا تھا کہ مذکورہ افسران ڈاکٹر قدیر کی اپنے دوستوں اور رشتہ داروں سے ملاقات میں اکیس جولائی کے عدالتی حکم کے تحت سہولیات فراہم کرنے میں پس و پیش سے کام لے رہے ہیں۔

عدالت نے اپنے مختصر فیصلے میں کہا کہ پٹیشنر افتخار حسین کا اس مقدمے سے کوئی تعلق نہیں ہے اور وہ اس مقدمے کے بارے میں کسی اعتراض کے مجاز نہیں ہیں۔ عدالت نے کہا کہ درخواست میں صدر مملکت کو بھی فریق بنانے کی درخواست کی گئی ہے جبکہ آئین کی دفعہ 246 کے تحت ایسا ممکن نہیں ہے۔

HOOVER, THE FBI AND AAFIA SIDDIQUI

The FBI lost much of its credibility when its chief J. Edgar Hoover was revealed to be a transvestite who preferred to be called Mary.

Hoover, probably the most powerful men in America some say even more powerful then the presidents he served under, was the originator of dirty tricks campaign and kept a lot of dirt on other people in his files.

The only players who were immune to Hoover’s secret files were those who had secrets of their own about his personal life - namely, the Mafia. Mafia bosses obtained information about Hoover’s @@@ life and used it for decades to keep the FBI at bay. Without this, the Mafia as we know it might never have gained its hold in America.

In May of 1972, Hoover - approaching his fifty-five-year anniversary with the Justice Department - boasted that the FBI remained the organization that he built upon his own principles and standards - of course now we know exactly what standards Hoover aka Mary had.

The FBI never really recovered its power or prestige once Hoover was ousted as a cross dresser.

There was more scandal to follow when Acting Director L. Patrick Gray was forced to resign after being caught up in the Watergate drama which brought down President Richard Nixon aka Tricky @@@y.

The FBI is supposed to be an institute based around freedom and democracy; instead it has become a factory from which lies and deceit are manufactured.

The reason for this brief history lesson into the FBI will now become apparent.

You see it is quite obvious that from cross dressers, liars and fraudsters, the FBI has now moved into the realms of fantasy land with the news that Dr. Aafia Siddique has “conveniently” been found outside a governor’s office in Afghanistan with her 12 year old son … FIVE years after her disappearance in Karachi.

According to the FBI she was in possession of “numerous documents describing the creation of explosives, as well as excerpts from the Anarchist’s Arsenal, descriptions of various landmarks in the United States, including in New York City” - you know, all the regular stuff a female terrorist would carry in her handbag!

The fantasists who concocted this story may as well have put Dr. Siddique in Hoover’s old red dress while they were on with it.

What we do know is that she has been shot at and injured. She was extradited to New York last night (Monday) and is being held in a prison in Manhatten down the road from the nightclub where Hoover used to pose as Mary.

She faces charges of attempted murder and assault of a US officer.

Does the FBI really think we are all that stupid and gullible?

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui - who had been sought by the FBI for several years regarding terrorism according to their website - is accused of shooting at two FBI special agents, a US Army warrant officer, an Army captain and military interpreters who unknowingly entered a room where she was being held unsecured.

She fired two shots, but hit no one, officials said. The warrant officer returned fire with a pistol, shooting Siddiqui at least once. She struggled with the officers before she lost consciousness, said officials, adding that she received medical attention.

The day before the shootings, Afghan police had arrested Siddiqui outside the Ghazni governor’s compound after finding bomb-making instructions, excerpts from the “Anarchist’s Arsenal,” papers with descriptions of US landmarks and substances sealed 20 in bottles and glass jars.

This all happened two weeks after I had given a press conference in Islamabad calling on the US to handover Prisoner 650 - The Grey lady of Bagram.

Coincidence? May be - but if the FBI think that we are going to buy the bovine scatterings they have just released to the US media they really do live in La La Land.

Let’s look at the cold hard fact of the case.

Dr Siddiqui, 36, is an American-educated neuroscientist. Since 2003, Siddiqui’s whereabouts have been the source of much speculation. According to Amnesty International, Siddiqui and her three small children were reported apprehended in Karachi, Pakistan, in March 2003 after the FBI issued at alert requesting information about her location earlier that month.

Several reports indicated Siddiqui was in US custody after her arrest in Karachi. But in May 2004 then-Attorney General Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller identified Siddiqui among several sought-after al Qaeda members.

Human rights group and a lawyer for Ms. Siddiqui, Elaine Whitfield Sharp, say they believe that she has been secretly detained since 2003, for much of that time at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.

“We believe Aafia has been in custody ever since she disappeared,” Ms. Sharp said in a telephone interview yesterday, “and we’re not willing to believe that the discovery of Aafia in Afghanistan is coincidence.”

American military and intelligence officials said that Ms. Siddiqui was in Pakistan for most of the past five years until she resurfaced last month and was captured by the Afghans.

She and her 12-year-old son were arrested in Ghazni, Afghanistan, on July 17. The American officials accused Ms Siddiqui trying to bomb the residence of Ghazni’s provincial governor.

Someone who also does not buy this nonsense is Asim Qureshi, Senior Researcher for the British-based international human rights organization Cage prisoners has issued the following statement, “There are many questions that the FBI and the Pakistani government need to answer in light of this admission. Why have the FBI continued to pretend to be seeking her while all the while knowing of her detention in Afghanistan? Is Aafia indeed Prisoner 650 whose screams were heard by former Bagram prisoners?

“Aafia Siddiqui is a woman who has been plagued by a number of problems in her life, none of which have anything to do with involvement with al-Qaeda. During the years the US claim she was working as an operative for the organization she was in fact the victim of domestic violence at the hands of an abusive husband. Community members in Boston declare that she was incapable of any violence, let alone being involved with a terrorist group.

“Whilst we welcome this disclosure reform the FBI, it has only come after mounting international pressure, and five years of detention and abuse. Siddiqui’s case represents the problem of disappearances in Pakistan in the most tragic way. The acceptance by the FBI that Siddiqui has been in custody in Afghanistan raises important questions which must be answered by the Pakistani and US governments. Siddiqui must be returned to Pakistan in order to faces charges for any crime she may have committed or released along with her children.”

Cage prisoners have led 20th campaign for Aafia Siddiqui for the past three years. Since her disappearance in March 2003 in Karachi, along with her three young children, the FBI has continually denied reports of her detention and that she was in their custody.

I am proud to be a patron of Cage Prisoners. Less than two weeks before this fiasco emerged, I traveled to Pakistan with Cage prisoners Director, Saghir Hussain, to launch their report, Devoid of the Rule of the Law, at a press conference organized by Imran Khan.

The press conference sparked an international storm of outrage, when I asked my colleagues in the Pakistan media to put pressure on the US to identify Prisoner 650 and the release of Aafia Siddiqui.

I personally spoke with Lt. Col. Mark Wright at the US Pentagon who denied all knowledge of Prisoner 650 or Dr Aafia Siddique.

Now I do not believe for one minute Lt. Col. Wright was lying - in fact I did suggest to him that the people he was speaking to in Afghanistan (the FBI) might be lying to him. I did ask him to call me back when he had the facts.

Perhaps Lt. Col. Wright you might want to make that call now and tell me the truth about Dr. Siddique and Prisoner 650 … but whatever you do mate, do not get your facts from the FBI which stands for Fantasy Brigade International … and that’s just the polite version.

’اتنی جلدی تو آدمی (نیویارک میں) برانکس سے مینہٹن نہیں پہنچ پاتا جتنے وقت میں آپ لوگ مدعاعلیہ کو افغانستان سے نیویارک لے آئے ہیں۔‘

یہ تھے جج ایلس کے الفاظ جو انہوں نے پاکستانی شہری نیورو سائنسدان اور مبینہ طور ال‍قاعدہ سے تعلق رکھنے والی ڈاکٹر عافیہ صدیقی کے مقدمے کی سماعت کے دوران کہے۔

گزشتہ پانچ برسوں سے لاپتہ ڈاکٹر عافیہ صدیقی کو منگل کی شام نیویارک کی عدالت یونائٹیڈ سٹیٹس کورٹ سدرن ڈسٹرکٹ میں پیش کیاگیا- عافیہ صدیقی کی کسی امریکی عدالت میں پہلی پیشی تھی۔

یونائیٹیڈ سٹیٹس آف امریکہ بنام عافیہ صدیقی کی کارروائی کی رپورٹنگ کرنے کے ذرائع ابلاغ کے نمائندے وہاں موجود تھے۔

ایک عدالتی اہلکار نے عدالت میں لوگوں کے داخلے کو منظم کرنے کے لیے اعلان کیا کہ’ سب سے پہلے سکیچ آرٹسٹس، پھر فیملیاں، پھر میڈیا کے لوگ اور پھر قانون نافذ کرنے والے۔‘

عدالتی کارروائی شروع ہوئی۔ مدعاعلیان آتے رہے، پیش کیے جاتے رہے- خواتین آرٹسٹ مدعاعلیان کے سکیچ بنانے کے موقع پر ان کو دور بین اٹھا کر دیکھتی رہیں-

اتنے میں ایک خاتون عدالت میں داخل ہوتی ہیں جن کے ہاتھ میں فائل ہے جس پر عافیہ صدیقی لکھا ہوا ہے۔اسی دوران ایف بی آئي اور پولیس والے عافیہ صدیقی کو کمرہ عدالت میں لائے-

عافیہ صدیقی اپنی وکیل اور وفاقی ایجنٹوں کے سہارے سے چل رہی تھیں- سچی بات تو ہے کہ ایک ہڈیوں کی گٹھری بنی عورت، لاغر اور کمزور۔ اس کی دونوں وکیل اسے سہارا دیکر کرسی پر بٹھانے لگے- سر پر سرخ رنگ کا سکارف یا حجاب، نیلے رنگ کی قمیص اور لمبے سکرٹ میں ملبوس عافیہ صدیقی کو کرسی پر بیٹھنے میں کچھ منٹ لگ گئے۔ ان کی وکیل نے کہا کہ ان کی مؤکل پاکستانی قونصلر سے کوئی بات نہیں کرنا چاہتی ہیں-

جب عدالت کی کارروآئی شروع ہوتی ہے- تو جج نے کہا’عافیہ صدیقی کھڑی ہوجائیں۔‘

عافیہ صدیقی کی وکیل الزبتھ فنک نے عدالت کو بتایا’ 'یور آنر وہ کھڑی نہیں ہوسکتیں- وہ زخمی ہیں- انہی گولی کا زخم ہے۔ عافیہ صدیقی کی دوسری وکیل وکیل اییلین وٹفیلڈ شارپ بھی موجود تھی-

جج نے عافیہ صدیقی کو کرسی پر بیٹھے جوابات دینے کی اجازت دی- جج نے کارروآئی کے ابتدا میں عافیہ صدیقی کو عدالتی طریقہ کار اور بنیادی قوانین پر عافیہ صدیقی سے وضاحتی سوال کیے۔

سکیچ آرٹسٹ نے عافیہ صدیقی کا سکیچ تیار کر کے عدالت کے باہر رکھا ہوا ہے

مترجم مہیا ہونے کے باوجود عافیہ صدیقی نے جج کے انگریزي زبان میں سوالوں کے انگریزي زبان میں ہی جوابات دیتی رہیں۔

جج نے عافیہ صدیقی سے پوچھا ’کیا تم جانتی ہو کہ حکومتِ امریکہ نے ایک کرمنل کمپلینٹ میں تم پر کیا الزام لگایا ہے۔‘

’یس‘ عافیہ صدیقی نے نخیف آواز میں جواب دیا۔

جج نے ایف بی آئی کیطرف سے عافیہ صدیقی کیخلاف داخل کردہ فوجداری مقدمے کی تفصیلات پڑھ کر سنائیں۔

ان تفصیلات کے مطابق عافیہ صدیقی نے چودہ جولائی دو ہزار آٹھ کو افغانستان میں بتائي گئی گرفتاری سے لیکر امریکی اہلکاروں پر تین اگست دو ہزار آٹھ کو ایم فور رائفل سے تھانے کے اندر حملے اور پھر زخمی اور گرفتار ہونے واقعات بیان کیے۔

عدالت نے عافیہ صدیقی کے وکلاء کی طرف سے اٹھائے جانیوالے سوالوں کا جواب سرکار ی استغاثہ کی طرف سے مقدمے کی سماعت تک مؤخر رکھاگيا-

عافیہ صدیقی کیخلاف امریکی حکومت کیطرف سے داخل کردہ کرمنل کمپلینٹ میں کہا گيا ہے کہ انہیں تین اگست کو افغانستان میں امریکی اہلکاروں پر حملہ کرنے کے اور ان کی طرف سے جوابی فائرنگ میں زخمی ہونے کے بعد گرفتار ہوئي اور چار اگست کو انہیں سیدھا نیویارک لایا گيا-

عافیہ پر حکومت امریکہ کے سول و فوجی اہلکاروں پر مبینہ طور قاتلانہ حملہ کرنے کا ا لزام لگایا ہے۔

عافیہ صدیقی کی وکیل الزبیتھ فنک نے عدالت سے سوال کیا کہ کیا عدالت سمجھتی ہے یہ نوے پاونڈ کی عورت ایم فور رائفل امریکی فوجی کے بوٹوں کے بیچ سے اٹھا کر ان پر فائر کر سکتی ہے- اور یہ بڑی مضحکہ خیز تہمت ہے-


کیا یہ القاعدہ کا نیا چہرہ ہے؟
کیا عدالت سمجھتی ہے یہ نوے پاونڈ کی عورت ایم فور رائفل امریکی فوجی کے بوٹوں کے بیچ سے اٹھا کر ان پر فائر کر سکتی ہے- اور یہ بڑی مضحکہ خیز تہمت ہے-

عافیہ کے وکیل
وکیل نے عدالت سے کہا کہ ’کیا القاعدہ کا دہشت گرد پیلے پردے کے پیچھے چھپ کر امریکی فوجی پر فائر کرسکتا ہے- کیا القاعدہ کے دہشتگرد اب لاغر، نڈھال اور نوے پاونڈز وزن کے ہوتے ہیں؟ کیا اب القاعدہ کا یہ نیا چہرہ ہے؟۔

وکیل نےکہا کہ عافیہ صدیقی کے بارے میں جو کچھ کہا جا رہا ہےوہ سب کچھ سنی سنائی باتوں پر مبنی ہے-

’ اس ایجنٹ نے بھی انہی باتوں کی بنیاد پر مدعاعیلہ کیخلاف نیویارک میں بیٹھ کر کیس بنایا ہے- پانچ ہزار میلوں پرے جو افغانستان میں ہے اسے بیٹھ کر اس ایجنٹ نے نیویارک میں کیسے دیکھا؟ وکیل الزبتھ جج سے مخاطب تھیں-

وکیل الزبیتھ نے کہا کہ انہوں نےمنگل کے روز پہلی بار عافیہ صدیقی کو دیکھا ہے اور عافیہ صدیقی اتنے برسوں بعد ’غیر حکومتی آدمی سے پہلی بار مل رہی ہے اور یہ سب سے بڑی انسانی حقوق کی خلاف ورزی ہے-‘

بہرحال وکیل الزبتھ نے کہا کہ بتایا جاتا ہے کہ خالد شیخ محمد نے اپنی تفتیش کے دوران عافیہ صدیقی کا نام لیا تھا جبکہ اس سے قبل بائیو ٹیرزم یا حیاتیاتی دہشتگردی میں اس کا کوئي تعلق نہیں رہا-

یو ایس ڈسٹرکٹ کورٹ ساوتھ ڈسٹرکٹ کے جج ایلس نے عافیہ کیخلاف گواہیاں لانے کیلیے امریکی حکومت کو دس دن کی مہلت دیتے ہوئے مدعاعیلہ پر واضح کیا کہ انیس اگست کو اس مقدمے کی ابتدائي سماعت ہوگي- عدالت گیارہ اگست کو عافیہ صدیقی کی ضمانت کی درخواست کی سماعت کرے گی۔

عدالت نے وکیل کی درخواست پر عافیہ صدیقی کا علاج کروانے کا حکم دیا۔ عافیہ صدیقی کی وکیل الزبتھ فنک نے عدالت کو بتایا کہ عافیہ صدیقی کی کمر پر گولی کا زخم ہے اور وہ نہایت ہی تکلیف میں ہے۔

اس موقع پر عافیہ صدیقی نے وکیل میڈیا کو کہ پاکستانی حکومت نے امریکی محکمہ خارجہ سے عافیہ صدیقی کو آزاد کرنے اور اس سے ملنے کی خواہش ظاہر کی ہے۔

عدالت کی عمارت کےباہر عافیہ کی دونوں وکیلوں نے ایک پرہجوم پریس کانفرنس میں کہا کہ عافیہ نے اپنے اوپر لگائے تمام الزامات کو مسترد کیا ہے۔

The issue is indeed very sad and i guess the only contribution we can do is that at least participate in the protests being held.
