following essay on the cow. It was published in the 'Times of India'.
This rare piece of literature was kept for posterity and is reproduced
here for members. "The Times of India")
The cow is one wonderful animal. Also he is quadruped, and because he is
female, he gives milk ; but he will only do so when he has got child. He
is like god, sacred to Hindus, and useful to other means. But he has got
four legs together, two are forwards and two are afterwards. His body
can be utilized for use, more so the milk. What it can not do ? Various
ghee, butter, cream, curds, whey, koya and the 'Condensed Milk' and so
forth. Also he is useful to cobblers, watermans, and the mankind in
general. His motion is slow only. That is because he is of ampituducous
species, and also his other motion is much useful to trees, plants, to
make fires. This is done by making flat cakes in hand and hotting them
in sun. He is the only animal that extricates his food after eating.
Then afterwards he eats by his teeth which are situated in the inside of
his mouth. He is incessantly grazing in the lawn, meadows of grasses.
His only attacking and defending weapon are his horns, especially so
when he has got child. This is done by bowing down whereby he causes the
weapon to be parallel to the ground of earth., and proceeds with
velocity forward. He has got tail also, but not like other similar
animals. It has hairs on the other end of it, done like this, to
frighten off the flies which weighs on his body, and chastising him
increasingly, whereupon, he gives him hit with it. The palms of his feet
are so soft unto touch, so that grasses he eats does not crush. At
nighttime he reposes by going down on the ground, then he shuts his eyes
like his relative, horse, who does not do so. This is the Cow.
P.S. The candidate passed the exams.
