there are two methods:
1: via DOS as told earlier
2: VIA Windows Xp/2000 (which is though easier)
1: Via DOS:
Using, Bootable Disk, Boot your PC. as when command prompt comes, type fdisk and enter. it will ask for large disk support somthing, press YES and enter.
next it will show 4 commands (I dont remember all, but as far as i remember, they are:
1: make parttion
2: delete partition
3: view partition information
4: view non-dos partiton
meray khayal mein yehi hein, khair, they are understood, if you are making partitions in a new drive, then press 1 and enter
it will again give 3-4 options,
make primary, extended, make logical in extended and set active (i dont remember the order)
start with primary, it will ask weather you want to allocate full disk space to primary (press NO), then it will ask for the spafce to be allocated to primary (in KB or %), use your imagination and give value, press enter. it will start making primary drive.
secondaly, when primary is created, you'll see partition information with 1 partition made.
then again repeat processes, and this time make extended partition. and allocate all space to extended, (you'll create further partitions in extended partition called logical drives), once exteneded partition is created, it will automatically ask for the logical drives to be defined in the extended partition. make as many as you like, again giving values either in KB or %. (keep in mind that extended partition works as a independednt frive, so giving % doesnt means that of your main h/d space, its what ever you allocated to extended partition. e,g your main h/d is 100GB, and you have allocated 8GB to primary, so rest 92GB is 100% of the Extended. so 20% logical means 20% of that 92GB and not 100GB), once all logical drives made, you have to set active partition, which you can set by going into the MENU (again i dont remember the sequence, but you'll understand fairly easily). once active partition is set, you'll see the A symbol in front of that drive.
Now Minus point of DOS based partitioning is that:
1: it is difficult
2: you cannot make your primary more than 8GB
2: Windows Based (only applicable to Windows XP/2000)
even in new hard drive, you can start the installation process without any probs. it will ask after loading drivers weather you want to allocate whole space to partition, or want to make partitions, this process is fairly simple and you can do it. BUT keep in mind, this process is calculated in MB rather than KB (as in case of DOS). and also, it might not take values in percentage. so you have to convert the values in respective MB/KB (1GB = 1024MB) (1MB = 1024KB), so if you want to make partition of 20GB then it will be 20 X 1024 = 20480MB to be exact.
you dont have to worry about making other partitions at this point, just continue with O/S installation, you can create further partitions after windows has been installed completely. once windows has been installed, it will not show your other h/d partitions. so you have to make using computer management tool (start > control panel > (performance & maintance (in new view) or Administrative Tools (in classic view) > computer management.
on left hand side, you'll see Storage > Disk Management (this is applicabel to both Windows XP Home/Professional and also to Windows 2000 (i believe).
clicking your hard drive will show your harddrive allocated spaces (empty will be with lines on it), right click and make EXTENDED Partition (not primary). and allocate WHOLE space to it (remember, you'll make partitions in form of logical drive in extended partition).
once it it created, iits header will turn GREEN, not ypou can starrt making partitions, right click and from menu select logical drive. and allocate space (like 20480MB which is = 20GB) , or whatever you like. it only takes values in MB and not KB or percentage.
* - keep drive letter assigned automatically. and also remember, as when windows is installed, it wil see only your primary partition at that time and your DVD/CD (optical frives), so it will assign C to primary partitions and D: onwards to Opticals, when you'll start creating partitions via Disk Management tool, it will assign what ever letter after d: is to them, like if you have 1 DVD-ROM, then sequence will be like:
c: your primary
d: your DVD
e: partition
f: partition
g: and so on --- other partitions
once you have created partitions using disk management tool, remember to format your partitions as well, this can be done opening my computer, right clicking e/f/g/h/i whatever you have made, and click format, it will open the format TOOL, - *** rememeber to FULL FORMAT and not the quick format when you are formating drives for the first time), after formating, you'll be able to use the drives and not before that.
hope it hepls! any questions (which should arrive, right here, I'll try making process layman's)
Cheers!!
