Thousands flock to Namoos-e-Risalat rally
By Shamim Bano
KARACHI: Thousands of flag-wielding and slogan-chanting faithful converged on the M.A. Jinnah Road to participate in the Namoos-e-Risalat march organized by Aalami Majlis-e-Tahafuz-e-Khatm-e-Nubuwwat on Sunday from Shamzai Chowrangi to Shara-e-Quadeen.
The city administration had beefed up security to avert any eventuality. Extra force had been deployed on key routes leading up to government buildings, including the Governor House.
Police patrolling the route of the rally asked traders to close their shops. Even small Panwalas were told to keep their cabins shut. Roads leading up to the route of the rally were fenced and petrol pumps barricaded.
The atmosphere resonated with slogans of Allaho Akber as various resolutions were read out, making a vow that faithful will sacrifice their lives for upholding the sanctity and honour of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
A resolution demanded that the culprit who made blasphemous cartoons must be handed over to a Muslim country. An international law guaranteeing reverence of sacred personalities should be drafted and anyone showing disrespect to such personages should be tried under this law, the rally demanded. It also called for treating blasphemy as international crime.
It was unanimously resolved that European countries whose newspapers had published caricatures should be declared enemies of Muslims and all ties with them should be severed.
The participants of the march condemned attack on two shrines in Iraq, and called it a part of the conspiracy to divide the Ummah.
They agreed to boycott the products of offending countries and urged expulsion of their ambassadors. They welcomed the reported announcement that such products will be boycotted at the Sindh Chief Minister House.
It was demanded that the government announce a clear-cut policy on the issue and take a bold step against countries whose newspapers had committed the heinous act.
The protestors also condemned the attack on churches and desecration of Holy Quran in Sukkur. Another resolution called for lifting restrictions on Madressahs. It warned against introducing the proposed amendment to the blasphemy law.
Opposition leader Moulana Fazlur Rahman in his telephonic address said that the attack on shrines in Iraq, desecration of holy places, and sacrilegious drawings, were all part of a well-thought-out plan of the West to destabilize Muslims all over the world.
Islamic world, he said, was passing through a crucial phase and it was time we acted wisely and thwarted all the nefarious designs of the West to create interfaith disharmony and sectarian strife.
Muslims all over the world are united in their protest against the publication of offensive pictures of Holy Prophet (PBUH), he said. The Zionist forces were acting on their plan to effect sectarian divide, he said.
He was of the view that Muslims should play their religious role accordingly and refrain from issuing provocative statements. He said "our struggle against the blasphemy will continue till Denmark and Norwegian governments tendered public apology with the Muslim states and the persons responsible awarded capital punishment".
The Moulana held the government of Punjab responsible for the turmoil which disturbed the peaceful rallies of the faithful. He said they wanted to raise voice against the publication of obnoxious images. He demanded that the issue be raised at international forum and United Nations bind all its member countries to denounce the act of blasphemy.
He said the international media should formulate a code of conduct, placing a complete ban on offensive images of sacred personalities in any newspaper.
Justice (retd) Moulana Taqi Usmani said Islam is a peace-loving religion which preaches tolerance but the West had provoked Muslims by drawing insulting images of the Holiest person on earth. He said the sanctity of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) "is more precious than our lives".
Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, MMA’s Deputy Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly, accused the West of fanning terrorism by allowing publication of blasphemous caricatures.
