Once upon a time a tiger was caught in a trap. He tried and tried to get out, but the trap was very strong and he could not get through the bars.
Just then a poor old man come walking by, and the tiger cried out, 'Let me out, my friend! Let me out of this awful trap.'
'No,' said the old man. 'You will get out and eat me up.'
'No, no!' shouted the tiger. 'I shall be your friend and servant.' Then he cried and cried until the old man was quite sad. 'All right,' said the old man at last; and he opened the door and out came the tiger.
Immediately he caught hold of the old man and whispered, 'You fool! Now I have caught you and i shall eat you up.'
Then the old man started to cry, and the tiger said,
'All right, I shall let you go. But first ask for help from three things you see on the road. If they agree to save you I shall let you go.'
The first thing the old man saw was a great tree in the forest. He asked tree for help but the tree laughed at him.
'You are Lucky!' said the tree. 'I live for many years and people eat my leaves and cut my branches. Go away.'
Then the old man went to a bullock. The bullock was pulling water from a well. 'You are lucky, old man,' said the bullock. 'I work all day and get little to eat.'
Then the old man asked the road to help him, 'O road,' he said. 'tell the tiger to set me free.'
'Never,' said the road. 'You are lucky. Look at me. People hurt me with their feer and carts. They throw rubbish on me. Go away and go back to the tiger.'
The old man was very sad, but he was also very honest, and he walked back to the tiger. On the way he met a jackal.
'You are very sad today, old man.' said the jackal. 'What's the matter?'
the old man told him about the tiger and the trap, and the tree, the bullock and the road.
'And now the tiger will eat me,' he cried.
The jackal felt sad and decided to help the old man. He went with him to the trap and spoke to the tiger.
'How did you get into the trap in the beginning?' he asked the tiger, 'Like this,' replied the tiger.
'But how? Show me,' said the jackal. The tiger got into the trap and at once the jackal shut the door.
'Now you can stay there,' said the clever jackal, and he and the old man went away.
